Jun 17, 2020 · A virtual local area network is a logical subnetwork that groups a collection of devices from different physical LANs. Large business computer networks often set up VLANs to re-partition a network for improved traffic management. Several kinds of physical networks support virtual LANs, including Ethernet and Wi-Fi.
This article will demonstrate how to configure VLANs using an LRT2x4 router. In the network topology below, the company has four (4) departments: HR, Sales, R&D, and Advertising. The following configuration would only allow Sales (VLAN 2) and Advertising (VLAN 4) departments to communicate with each other but not with other departments. My Ubiquiti USG supports VLANs, and when paired with a UAP-AC-Lite / Pro, you'd have great wireless and VLAN support. You'd need to add some sort of managed switch to have more than one LAN port available, though (the USG only has three ports -- WAN, LAN, and a port that is labeled for VoIP, but can be turned into another LAN port) Port-based VLAN's means that you can reconfigure ports to be in different VLAN's. Port-based VLAN's do not confirm 802.1q VLAN support. 802.1q VLAN's means that you can tag VLAN's with 802.1q headers to create a trunk between two devices that carries frames for multiple VLAN's. 802.1q VLAN's confirm that there is also Port-based VLAN support. Re: recommend router and switch for VLAN You don't need a router that supports vlans. You only need to replace your unmanaged switch(s) with a managed one(s). Understand that the servers switch port and the routers switch port will belong on both vlans which is how each vlan gets access to them while remaining separate and secure from each other. I would recommend Ubiquiti AC Pros which allows you to create up to 4 SSIDs and support VLAN. For Parental controls you need the devices to have a content filter or buy a firewall that includes Content filtering with it. The only thing you wouldn't have is USB support with the Ubiquiti Access Points.
